POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Director of Community-Based Enterprise at Sus’tut LP is a critical leadership role responsible for overseeing the strategic and operational management of various community-based enterprises. The role includes both shared and explicit responsibilities in creating sustainable, community-focused business initiatives while fostering a deep connection to the Takla Nation community. The Director will collaborate closely with the Board of Directors, ensuring alignment with long-term goals and community development objectives, while maintaining a strong presence in the community. The position demands a strategic thinker who can integrate business acumen with cultural understanding, ensuring that traditional Indigenous values inform all business operations and decisions. The Director of Community Based Enterprise has to establish a good working relationship with the Director of Land Based Enterprise.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
SHARED RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Strategic Planning:
- Develop a comprehensive 3–5-year strategic plan to ensure the sustainability and growth of community-based enterprises.
- Ensure the strategic plan aligns with the Takla Nation’s goals and community development objectives
2.Annual Operating Plan:
- Prepare and oversee the implementation of the annual operating plan to meet financial, operational, and strategic objectives.
3.Financial Management:
- Develop and manage cash flow forecasts, budgets, and financial reporting for community-based enterprises.
- Ensure fiscal responsibility and transparency in all business operations.
4.Human Resource Management:
- Lead, manage, and support staff across various community enterprises, ensuring high performance and retention.
- Develop policies and procedures that promote a healthy and productive work environment.
5.Health and Safety Program:
- Design and implement a comprehensive health and safety program to ensure a safe workplace for all staff and community members involved in enterprise operations
6.Risk Management:
- Conduct risk assessments and develop strategies to mitigate business risks, ensuring the stability and longevity of community-based enterprises.
7.Board Communication and Management:
- Serve as the administrative lead for all communication with the Board of Directors, providing regular updates on enterprise performance, challenges, and opportunities.
EXPLICIT RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Management of Key Enterprises:
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Takla Trading Post Store and Fuel Centre (TTP), TTP Restaurant, TTP Hotel, 24-man Camp, and the sawmill.
- Ensure these businesses are financially viable, operationally efficient, and aligned with community development goals.
2.Property and Lease Management:
- Manage the RCMP property leases, ensuring timely and effective communication and operations
3.Freight Operations:
- Supervise freight logistics between Prince George and Takla Landing, ensuring timely delivery of goods and services essential to the community.
4.External Funding:
- Identify, pursue, and activate available external funding sources to support the growth and sustainability of community-based enterprises.
5.Prince George Sus’tut Office Operations:
- Oversee the operations of the Prince George Sus’tut offices, ensuring efficiency and collaboration between Takla Landing and Prince George
6.Financial Consolidation:
· Consolidate the annual budget, operating plan, and cash flow forecast for all community-based enterprises under the Director’s supervision.
7.Other Duties:
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Board of Directors to ensure the success of Sus’tut LP’s community enterprises.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:
A key component of this role is maintaining a consistent presence in the Takla Nation community. The Director will spend significant time in the community to build relationships, address issues, and ensure that business operations align with the community’s cultural and economic goals. The Director is expected to respect and learn about Takla Nation culture, history, and aspirations, integrating an Indigenous lens into all aspects of their work. |
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Education:
- Post-secondary degree in business administration, social entrepreneurship, or non-profit management is preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Experience:
- Minimum of two years’ experience in a leadership role, preferably in a social enterprise or non-profit organization.
- Experience in financial management, budgeting, human resource management, and risk management.
- Proven track record of successfully managing diverse staff and leading community-focused enterprises.
Cultural Competency:
- Knowledge of Indigenous culture, history, and current issues, particularly relating to First Nations and remote communities.
- A commitment to integrating Indigenous knowledge and practices into business operations.
Skills:
- Strong understanding of social impact, corporate social responsibility, and sustainable development goals through an Indigenous lens.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills to engage with staff, community members, and external stakeholders.
- Ability to develop and implement strategic plans, manage complex projects, and solve problems creatively.
- Flexibility and adaptability to work across multiple locations, including remote communities.
- The successful candidate must be a strong, committed leader who is able to travel to the community or on the land as the situation arises.
