POSITION TITLE: Fire Prevention & Safety Coordinator Internship

DIRECT REPORT: Emergency Services Manager, Fire Chief

TERM: 6 Months, Fulltime

START DATE: June 17, 2024

WAGE: $22.52 – $24.13


ABOUT TAKLA FIRST NATION:   The traditional territory of the Takla First Nation is located in North Central British Columbia and totals approximately 27,250 square kilometers. The territory is a rich environment of lakes, rivers, forests, and mountains, bordered on the west by the Skeena Mountains and on the east by the Rocky Mountains. Takla Nation is an amalgamation of the North Takla Band and the Fort Connelly Band, a union which occurred in 1959. Our traditional lands are the geographic areas occupied by our ancestors for community, social, economic, and spiritual purposes. Carrier and Sekani place names exist for every physical feature and place that we occupy. Each name reflects the significance of the feature or site and today provides us with historical information to the rich history and extensive knowledge of our land and our resources.

POSITION OVERVIEW:   The development of a new position, “Fire Prevention & Safety Coordinator Internship” will provide an opportunity for a Takla member living in or wanting to live in the community. The individual will be committed to fire prevention for members and youth, Fire Smart education, and emergency response. As an internship position once hired, the coordinator will be required to successfully complete a number of training and professional development programs as well as internal training and mentorship by the Takla Fire Chief. The position is based out of Takla Landing, BC and will initially work out of a shared office setting at the Takla Admin Office. 


·         Support the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and Emergency Support Services (ESS).

·         Updating of the fire and safety response systems.

·         Provide support to the Emergency Program Coordinator as required.

·         Records management and day-to-day administration.

·         Coordinates the Fire Smart education program.

·         Performs community home inspections and safety equipment installations.

·         Business and restaurant safety inspections and installation of safety equipment.

·         Attend the Juvenile Fire Safety Program.

·         Public speaking at community forums, presentations to groups, provincial and/or agencies.

·         Work with the public on fire prevention and safety in the home.

·         Work with the school to educate K to Grade 9 on fire prevention and emergency preparedness.

·         Research and develop educational materials for the public and schools on fire prevention.

·         Support emergency response activities.

·         Support administration for the Emergency Services Department.

·         Assist in developing safety plans for other Departments and Takla Businesses.

·         Provide safety support to other Takla Departments.

·         Perform assessments for home safety and classroom safety inspections.

·         Other duties as assigned by the Fire Chief to support Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness.


·         Good organization and planning skills with the ability to multi-task.

·         Public speaking experience is a benefit, comfortable speaking to groups in various settings.

·         Familiarity with the following will be considered an asset.

·         Microsoft Office Suite and other standard software.

·         BC Fire Smart Principles.

·         Performing classroom safety assessments and home safety inspections.

·         Risk Management experience.


·         An office administration certificate and a minimum of five years’ experience at a similar level of responsibility or an equivalent combination of education and experience is desired.

·         Prove ability to prioritize effectively, and to be flexible in a busy, demanding environment.

·         Follow all Takla Nation Policies and Procedures and display a commitment to the values and culture.

·         Ability to undergo an appropriate criminal records review and police record check successfully and periodically is required.

·         Excellent communication skills, including persuasion and negotiation skills to work with internal and external stakeholders and community members.

·         Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure.

·         High level of organizational skills and preparedness.

·         Excellent interpersonal skills, including effective problem-solving and referral skills.

·         Ability to think and act strategically, provide sound judgement, and provide a positive, respectful, and energetic attitude.

·         Knowledge of First Nations culture and traditions, and of systemic issues faced by First Nations people.

·         Experience working with Youth in the outdoors and within the Takla Community.

·         Customer service experience in any field.

·         Social media experience and excellent communication skills are beneficial.

·         Minimum Driver License “7 N” required.
