POSITION TITLE:   High School Tutor 2024    
ABOUT TAKLA FIRST NATION:

The traditional territory of the Takla First Nation is located in North Central British Columbia and totals approximately 27,250 square kilometers. The territory is a rich environment of lakes, rivers, forests, and mountains, bordered on the west by the Skeena Mountains and on the east by the Rocky Mountains.Takla Nation is an amalgamation of the North Takla Band and the Fort Connelly Band, a union which occurred in 1959. Our traditional lands are the geographic area occupied by our ancestors for community, social, economic, and spiritual purposes. Carrier and Sekani place names exist for every physical feature and place that we occupy. Each name reflects the significance of the feature or site and today provides us with historical information to the rich history and extensive knowledge of our land and our resources.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Takla Nation seeks a motivated individual to join our team and provide support and tutoring to our students in the later part of High School and/or in the Driftwood Outdoor Guide & Business Apprenticeship (DOGBA) program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Report to Educa1on and Youth and Elder department as required
  • Documenting & book own scheduling as students need
  • Documenting hours of each student in excel spreadsheets
  • Will take direction from youth and elder department & DOGBA program
  • Work with the team on scheduling for on-the-land and abroad
  • Work with students to improve their skills in certain subjects
  • Manage tutoring sessions with multiple students virtually or in community
  • Teach them note-taking, studying, organization, planning and other effective learning styles
  • Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate or build confidence in students
  • Provide one-on-one instructions to individuals to improve academic performances
  • Prepare biweekly time sheets & student(s), time, and progress reports
  • Be able to upload the student’s work & outcomes to the school portal for grading
  • Communicate with applicable school district and school
  • Assist in registering students and discussing education plans with teachers
  • Communicate and supply the education results to the applicable school for grading
  • Complete a RCMP criminal check
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • As a tutor, have patience, as many students you work with will have trouble understanding the content you are trying to help them with.
  • You must have a positive attitude
  • Ability to adapt to individual student needs and learning styles
  • Highly organized and accountable
  • Be aware of learning styles and adapt to what works best
  • Evaluate strengths, skills, and students’ processes
  • Bring knowledge and skills to help students find new ways to look at difficult skills and concepts
  • Must be flexible to tutor math, science, and English
