ABOUT TAKLA FIRST NATION:

The traditional territory of the Takla First Nation is located in North Central British Columbia and totals approximately 27,250 square kilometers. The territory is a rich environment of lakes, rivers, forests, and mountains, bordered on the west by the Skeena Mountains and on the east by the Rocky Mountains.Takla Nation is an amalgamation of the North Takla Band and the Fort Connelly Band, a union which occurred in 1959. Our traditional lands are the geographic area occupied by our ancestors for community, social, economic, and spiritual purposes. Carrier and Sekani place names exist for every physical feature and place that we occupy. Each name reflects the significance of the feature or site and today provides us with historical information to the rich history and extensive knowledge of our land and our resources.

POSITION OVERVIEW:The position is based out of Takla Landing, BC but may involve occasional visits to Prince George, BC and other areas for conferences.Joining our emerging Youth and Elder department, the Takla Landing (TL) Youth Worker will assist in providing a unique, cultural approach to the prevention and intervention of substance use, abuse and violence for our youth. The program provides support through recreational, educational and cultural experiences and services. This year long program offers weekly programming, one-on-one services, after-school programming, summer and cultural camps, as well as resource bridging. This position offers guidance, support, encouragement and a stable environment while also maintaining healthy boundaries. ;

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Connect with Takla youth attending Nus Wadeezulh Community School and schools in Prince George.
  • Assist the Youth and Elder department in the day-to-day operations of the Youth Services programs;
  • Cooperate in development and implementation of recreational and cultural support services and programs for the Youth and Elder department.
  • Facilitate life skill development by offering workshops, guest speakers and community experts.
  • Provide educational opportunities for at risk youth in the following areas – health and wellness, addictions, family violence, abuse, self-esteem and culture and traditions;
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience, with relevant post-secondary degree or diploma in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of First Nations culture and traditions and of the systemic issues faced by First Nations people;
  • A passed criminal background check of vulnerable peoples before hire,
  • First Aid certification,
  • A valid Class 5 BC driver’s license and ability to travel and work in the field within the Takla Territory
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
